Events in Orleans County
Teen Center Garden Northeast Kingdom Community Action Youth Services teen center youth are planning to plant a garden in the spring to maintain throughout the summer and early fall. We have some land that we are going to cultivate and use to plant flowers and vegetables. As well as we would like to construct two raised flower beds to line up along the building. This will beautify the area outside of the teen center, and the teens with also be growing vegetables that they can use to make meals. This project will also allow those teens interested in gardening to learn more and to spread their interests with other teens. This is and ongoing spring and summer project, but we are going to use Global Youth Service Day to get it kicked off and to really get it going.
Empty Bowls Sterling College is hosting an Empty Bowls event to both raise awareness of hunger in Vermont and raise funds to help alleviate that hunger. Here's how it works: student and staff volunteers are currently identifying local artists to craft handmade bowls specifically for our event. On the evening of April 30th, at the actual Empty Bowls event, these bowls will be set out (empty) alongside a simple yet wholesome meal. Up to 150 attendees will join together for a meal, choosing an empty bowl, filling it with food, and making a donation in return. A speaker will present on the topic of hunger in Vermont and everyone will reflect on its meaning. At the conclusion of the meal, attendees will take home their bowls to serve as a reminder of all of the empty bowls in our world. All donations will be given to a hunger-related local charity. Bring a hungry belly and willingness to contemplate the meaning of Empty Bowls. Minimum suggested donation is $12 per person.
