ReSOURCE YouthBuild Burlington
IMANI Center
The second service we are participating in is assisting the IMANI center in creating ramp access to their building. On the third Friday of every month, YouthBuild students work with IMANI to put together food boxes for donation. The front entrance needs better ramp access in order to make delivery easier. Our students are going to create better access to the front entrance as well as repair the shelving units used for food storage

Friends for Burma
Fletcher Free Library, Burlington
The Burmese government continues to surpress its people ever since it took power in 1962. Many ethnic minorities became refugees because they could no longer tolerate forced labor, arbitrary executions, destruction of food crops, and forced relocation of village. Others became refugees because of the junta's violent crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators. The current number of refugees is around 300,000 and many now live in Thailand, one of the countries that has played host to Burmese refugees. Some have come to the U.S. in the hope of beginning a new life. Adjusting to a completely new culture is especially difficult for the children, who try to balance Burmese traditions at home and to assimilate with their classmates at school. To help improve their situation, we (a group of 9 students) have been mentoring them on a regular basis every Saturday morning at the Fletcher Free Library. For the global youth service week, we will continue to focus on mentoring the children in Burlington (April 17). However, we are also currently making plans to bring these students up to campus for a visit on April 24 so that they can get a glimpse of college life. We will have events planned out on campus and will update you on the details once they are finalized.

The Chickadee Connection
UVM Jericho Research Forest
This project seeks to address the dual needs for public education and hands-on research opportunities for youth by the development and implementation of a student-run long-term research study focused on Black-capped Chickadees in Jericho Research Forest. We aim to provide an opportunity for local people to learn about bird research techniques and make arrangement for their continued involvement with the project. There will be opportunity for members of the public to be involved with the project beyond this season through participation in the resighting and reporting of previously banded birds and as volunteers at future banding events.

Day of Service at the Sustainability Academy
Sustainability Academy at Lawrence Barnes
The students, staff, community partners, and family members will engage in service projects connected to grade level curriculum on April 22nd. Students will begin the day with pre-service reflection followed by service projects. Kindergarten will focus their projects in their classrooms, First grade will focus their projects on the campus, Second and Third graders will focus their projects in and around the school neighborhood, and Fourth and Fifth grade will focus on the Lake and the Intervale. After a morning of providing services to our communities, and community partners, students will host a community lunch and celebration. The day will culminate with reflection activities that connect our learning and experience across curriculum and grade level. A diverse group of families, staff, students and community partners are organizing this day of service that will serve as a model of Education for Sustainability and our school's mission for making a difference.

Cleaning & Greening
Boys and Girls Club of Burlington
We will be working with Torch Club and a few other interested teens. Our project is to pick up trash around the club, recycle and to pick up trash at Roosevelt Park (across the street). We will also be adding an environmental component. We will be starting to harvest our seeds for our gardens outside of the Club. This will include putting the seeds in soil and educating on why it is important to grow food and why vegetables/herbs/flowers are important for our bodies and our ecosystem.

Mentor Day
Saint Michael's College
This day will be a way to honor our mentors and mentees of our program. We will be hosting a day to celebrate the accomplishments and relationships over the year. We will be having a carnival themed party, with foods, games, and inflatables.
